My Name Is Khan a hit in Egypt

Shah Rukh Khan starrer My Name Is Khan seems to have touched a chord with the Egyptian cine lovers, who continue to throng theatres even two months after its release.

The film, which talks about the Islamophobia that gripped the US after 9/11, made a record one million Egyptian pounds in the first four weeks of its release.

The Karan Johar directed film, which was distributed in Egypt by United Motion Pictures, has become a hit among public as well as critics.

The distribution head Antoine Zind says it has been decades since he took the risk with showing an Indian movie in Egyptian theatres but My Name Is Khan has changed his perception about Indian cinema.

Famous analyst Muhammad al-Kurdusi is one of the strongest supporters of the movie.

"This is no ordinary movie. This movie reflects what we, as Muslims, learnt in primary school. The hero is no ordinary hero. He is more like a new prophet of his time but are we true Muslims to believe in him?," al-Kurdusi said.

The Indians have done Muslims in general a huge favour, according to media pundit Khalid Muntassir.

"If we had placed thousand sheiks in the thousand largest squares in the world and aided them with microphones, they wouldn't have rectified the image of Islam and ridded it from the false accusations Osama Bin Laden stuck to it like this one Indian movie My Name is Khan has," Muntassir wrote.

The next film to be screened in Egypt is Kabir Khan's New York' starring Bollywood heartthrob John Abraham and Katrina Kaif.

Incidentally, New York also talks about how the 9/11 incident changed the lives of Muslims living in the US.

American version of My Name Is Khan to be shorter by 35 minutes

If the name Alan Edward Bell doesn't ring a 'bell' in your mind, then, let us tell you that, he is the same man who is responsible for the crisp editing of 500 Days Of Summer. And it is going to be this man who will very soon be the talk of the nation (or is that 'globe'?), as he is the man responsible for 'taming the hurricane'. For the uninitiated, we are talking about the climax of Karan Johar's My Name Is Khan wherein the characters get stranded due to a hurricane. Post the release of the film in India; while the story and screenplay were appreciated to the hilt, this was one particular scene that was panned by critics alike. But, for its US release, KJo has let Bell's hands to do the talking (read 'snipping').

Karan Johan candidly admits that he was expecting this scene not to work in the same wavelength as the film's story. He also added that, it was for this reason, that he let Bell to do his job (without any interference from him) since he wanted an outsider's perspective to the story. This has now resulted in the chopping of the hurricane scene in the US version of My Name Is Khan. Bell's work will be visible in the film, which releases on May 7th in the US, and will have its subtitles and voiceovers in English for the audiences there.

Just A Minute With: Karan Johar on 'My Name is Khan'

By Shilpa Jamkhandikar

MUMBAI (Reuters) - In many ways, Karan Johar epitomises Bollywood. His films have everything the world's largest film industry is known for -- lavish song-and-dance sequences, melodrama and large doses of tradition.

But the 37-year-old is moving away from his comfort zone with his latest offering "My Name is Khan", a sweeping saga that deals with issues like race and prejudice.

Johar spoke to Reuters about "My Name is Khan", why love is missing from films these days and wooing the diaspora audience.

Q: This film is unlike any you have directed. Do you have any apprehensions about audience reactions?

A: "Well, as a director all you can do is go by your own instincts. A lot of people may tell you a lot of things, but if I listen to all of them, all I will get is a 'khichdi'. I feel that I have made what I wanted to make, but I cannot predict audience reactions for any film of mine, let alone this one.

"I can only hope that it has met with everyone's expectations. But one thing I can say -- if you see the film in isolation, you won't say that I have made it. It is unlike any of my earlier work. That is one thing I am really proud of -- that I broke my own mould."

Q: Love has been a constant theme in your films. Is it the same in 'My Name is Khan'?

A: "Yes, very much. Shah Rukh plays a man with Asperger's Syndrome who undertakes a journey, only for the sake of love. These days, there is so much happening in our world that there are no great love stories left. Nobody does that much for love. If love isn't working out there is always an option -- divorce is around the corner. But a man like Rizwan Khan thinks nothing of making that kind of journey for love. That is why we felt that the character in the film had to be different, perhaps medically."

Q: How has the notion of love changed since the time of 'DDLJ' or 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'?

A: "You know there was an innocence in that love, but if you notice, which was the last pure love story that was made? The country that only made love stories has stopped making them. See, in every year the biggest film will be one that isn't a love story.

"The biggest hit of this year is '3 Idiots', and last year it was 'Ghajini'. Whereas in the 90s the hits were films like 'DDLJ' and 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'. The decade has lost love, and that has happened because love is not in people's thoughts any more.

"The intense romantic love has been cluttered by too many things that surround you. Now if you make a love story, people call it mushy. Too much communication has killed romance. You know everything about other person, so where's the romance?"

Q: Does that disappoint you?

A: "Love has changed. Love just has a different interpretation. It is the order of the day. It doesn't disappoint, because you just have to roll with the changes. Even today if you make a love story, it has to be slightly more contemporary. Love is something that you have to address in a way that is today. Today I cannot make a 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'. When I see it on TV, I cringe and I wonder where these scenes came from. But they came from me only."

Q: Your film is releasing at a time when Bollywood is recovering from quite a bad year. How do you see this year panning out?

A: "2009 has been a wake-up call for the industry. For two years we have lived in a bubble where everyone started thinking that we have struck oil. But that was an artificial rise. Everyone believed there was a lot of money. Money was being thrown at actors, actors were asking for more money, technicians were going mad, and budgets were escalating. We made many mistakes in those years. 2006 was a good year, 2007 and 2008 were delusional years, 2009 was a wake-up year and 2010 will be the year that it will all settle down."

Q: There is a resonance in 'My Name is Khan' about prejudices and America after 9/11. What kind of a statement does the film make?

A: "The film addresses a perception about a certain religion and that comes largely from unawareness. The film touches on the fact that the perception doesn't apply to everyone.

"You cannot generalise about any one but the fact is that the same perception has permeated into the heartlands of our own country. So it is something to address. Shah Rukh Khan has a line in the film where he says 'My name is Khan and I am not a terrorist' and it is a very loaded line even though it is said very endearingly."

Q: You worked with a Hollywood studio on this film. How did that change the way you made the film?

A: "They had some suggestions about the film that came from an organic and creative place and we have incorporated a lot of those suggestions. Dealing with them has been great. It has been an eye-opener because there are lots of rules to follow, lots of deadlines to meet and lots of deliverables.

"The experience has been great because it comes from a great passion for cinema. They have taught us a lot. They brought a lot of discipline to the project. The fact that we had to follow rules was an impediment, but it has taught us to stay within the rules."

Q: What do you think you have taught them?

A: "That the film industry is beyond legalities and modalities in India. It is a lot of emotion that we run by that cannot be contracted and cannot have lawyers."

Q: This film is being targeted as a non-diaspora film by Fox, but you have been often accused of making films only for the Indian diaspora.

A: "Yes I know and I am tired of that tag. I don't think anyone understands the NRI audience. I make a film because I feel it will connect with some one sitting in Bihar and someone in New York."

Who's playing Obama in My Name is Khan?

A website has reported that Christopher Duncan is the man who portray US President Barack Obama, in Karan Johar's forthcoming film - My Name is Khan.

Duncan is a known face in Hollywood and famous for being Obama's mimic. He has done several appearances as Obama on variety shows on US television. He has many TV shows to his credit, namely the Tonight Show with Jay Leno where he impersonated Obama. Besides this he appeared on also appeared on - Bones, 24, CSI: Miami, The Practice.

My Name is Khan would be a Bollywood debut for this actor.

A source reveals, "They didn't want to mix footage of the real Obama in the film. Hence they were searching for an actor who comes close to him. After doing several auditions they found Duncan through a Hollywood agent. He's excellent at mimicking Obama and can easily pass off as the President."

Forrest Gump too had a scene in which Tom Hanks interacts with the US President. But actual footage of Nixon was superimposed in the frame with Hanks.

Karan got terrified of water snake!

When Shah Rukh Khan shoots, everyone would give an arm and a leg to be present on the sets.

However just before the shooting of My Name Is Khan began in Filmcity, Karan Johar taken aback by the presence of an extremely slimy and uninvited guest on the sets - a full grown water snake.

Recounts Karan, “Yes, a snake was spotted when the set was being made. Our production designer Sharmista Roy was on the sets but the others said we should not harm the snake because they are considered a good omen. So we respected that belief and it was allowed to go away on its own.”

But what the filmmaker hadn’t accounted for was the snake’s second visit. And it couldn’t have come at a worse time. A major sequence was being shot inside a specially constructed tank at Kranti maidaan in Film City. It was a flood sequence and the cast and crew were inside it when an assistant spotted a huge water snake. “It was chaotic to say the least,” says a source present on the sets. Shah Rukh was immediately taken out of the water and Karan flatly refused to resume shooting till the snake was caught.

Karan confirmed the horrific scare. “We had 500 extras in the water tank when the snake was spotted. An expert snake catcher Abhishek Verma got into the water and caught the snake. We made sure not to hurt the snake and it was later released in its natural habitat. Thankfully everything came back to normal after that.”

Preity compliments Kajol’s performance in ‘My Name is Khan'

The world of showbiz may be full of catfights and raging egos but that does not stop actress Preity Zinta from complementing Kajol on her "outstanding" performance in 'My Name Is Khan'.

With Bollywood's golden couple Shahrukh Khan and Kajol coming together after almost a decade, the film is one of the most awaited releases of 2010, but Preity has already given her verdict.

"I saw some of the film's (My Name Is Khan) footage and she is outstanding in it and so is Shahrukh and I think it will be great movie," Preity, who was here in the capital as the brand ambassador of Vatika Enriched Almond Hair Oil, said.

Preity can even bet on the fact that no body could have done the role better than Kajol.
"Look at Kajal. She goes and gets married, has a kid. She disappears for three years and she comes back does some thing like 'My Name Is Khan' and she is so good in the film. I can bet that none of the actresses can stand in front of her," Preity said.

Karan Johar directed 'My Name is Khan' is set to hit the theaters in Feb next year and stars Shah Rukh as Rizvan Khan, an unconventional hero, who embarks on an incredible journey in order to win back the love of his life (Kajol).

And along the way, his unique brand of goodness and humanity touches the lives of many and inspires a nation.

SRK practices autism at home

Shah Rukh Khan continues to practice the body language and speech patterns of his autistic character even at Home

Before Shah Rukh Khan played the autistic character in My Name Is Khan, Karan Johar met Londoner Chris Aston who suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome and his wife Maxine, who wrote a book on how to cope with a spouse suffering from the disease.

Says Karan, “Shibani and I met the couple. They were gracious enough to meet us in London. And that couple’s relationship became the basis of Rizwan and Mandira’s relationsip in My Name Is Khan. At its core level this film is a love story.”

Continues Karan, “My writer Shibani Bhatija researched extensively on various aspects of an autistic disorder and contacted the various National Autistic Centres. Shibani and I personally met a lot of autistic people, took notes went to U-Tube. Then Shah Shah Rukh did his own research.”

Karan admits this has been the most difficult film of his career. “It has taken its toll on me and Shah Rukh. It’s true Shah Rukh remained in character as Rizwan Khan even at home. At home in his body language he’s always Rizwan. I see him doing it all the time. I don’t think he has got out of it. Even when he’s with his children at home.”

Karan cuts down the theory that Shah Rukh’s disorder is inspired from Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump. “It’s not Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump at all. That was a totally different strain of autism. It’s nearer to Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man, though still very different. It’s what we call high-functional autism. You can have a regular life, be married, have children. But the syndrome does convey a fair amount of quirks and eccentricities. But his character is not essentially neuro-typical. The film has made me understand human behaviour and how to be compassionate and humane.”The film has sapped Karan’s energies. He needs to take a break. “I need to go away for a month. I don’t think it will happen. But no harm in dreaming.”

(Times of India)

My Name Is Khan on a swimming spree

Water has always been a source of thrill and… trouble for some. The team of Karan Johar’s 'My Name Is Khan' is enjoying the watery days, both inside and outside the film sets. While its pouring cats-dogs outside, its equally water-jammed on the shooting sets of this movie.

Enclosed within the premises of Film City, the crew are having troublesome time shooting inside three feet deep water. The scene, which features a flooded New York, has been impressively recreated the foreign location at a whopping amount and planning. It is said that artificial rains are used thus adding more inconvenience to the shoot. Even the cameras were not spared; they had been positioned underwater to capture scenes below the water.

The real rains had also found its way into the sets, helping the team to get a natural effect. As for the cast of the movie, they are really said to be braving the water shoot. Our King Khan seemed to have gone all frog-skinned due to the long stay in waters. He has been even nicknamed as Mermaid by the people on the set. But along with the water, SRK has seemed to be taking it sportingly. After Shah Rukh, Jimmy Shergill will soon dive into the schedule to finish his round of shooting.

Hmm, our only concern is that hope all the people involved here would come out fit and fine.

Shahrukh Khan becomes wrinkled!

King of Bollywood Shahrukh Khan was wet and wrinkled. And it was none other than Karan Johar who wanted him like that.

According to reports for ‘My Name is Khan' Shahrukh was required to stay in neck-deep water for two days. And everybody knows how the skin becomes when one stays far too long in the water.

When Shahrukh emerged out of the water everyone on the sets started calling him ‘Mermaid'. But ever the gentleman Shahrukh didn't mind it a wee bit and laughed at his own watery get up.

Shahrukh we hope that this get up doesn't make you lose your fans!

On The Sets : My Name is Khan

(Apunkachoice)

My Name is Khan's actual price still unknown

So what's the actual price of My Name is Khan? Has Fox Star Studios India paid a massive Rs.100 crores for the global rights of the film (excluding music rights)? Or is the actual price Rs.81 crores? The speculation continues...

"It's a privilege to be associated with Karan Johar and Shahrukh Khan. It can't get bigger than that. But the price is completely not 100 crores or 81 crores. I wouldn't like to reveal the exact numbers, but it's completely off the mark," Vijay Singh, CEO of Fox Star Studios India, breaks his silence on this topic.

But what holds significance is that the film in question would be released extensively in the international markets. "My Name is Khan has tremendous international appeal and would be released by Fox Searchlight in America and 20th Century Fox across the globe. We aren't looking at a fancy print count to begin with, but we would take it beyond the Indian diaspora. Like Slumdog Millionaire was released at a mere 10 screens when it started out in America, but the screen count gradually rose to almost 3,000, thanks to a systematic strategy. That would be the strategy for My Name is Khan as well," Vijay Singh divulges.

Fox bags rights for My Name Is Khan in Rs 100 crore deal

Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol starrer My Name is Khan, directed by Karan Johar, is set to create a record ahead of its release early next year with Fox Star Studios reportedly buying its marketing and distribution rights for around Rs 100 crore.

This makes it the biggest distribution deal in Bollywood, outstripping Rs 90 crore for Aamir Khan-starrer Ghajini (see table).

The film, co-produced by Johar and Khan, has a Rs 55 crore budget and is set against the 9/11 terror attacks and its impact on an Indian Muslim living in the US.

According to industry watchers, Dharma Productions and Fox Star — the film marketing, distribution and production arm of Rupert Murdoch’s Fox and Star TV Network — have been in talks for a 50:50 co-production deal for Bollywood films. The distribution of My Name is Khan could be the starting point of their relationship.

Asked about the deal, Vivek Krishnani, head of distribution, Marketing and Syndication at Fox Star Studio, said: “We have been in talks with Karan Johar for movie rights. That is the stated position. I do not know if any deal has been struck on this matter nor do I know if something has been worked out in Los Angeles.”
Fox Star Studio came into prominence for distributing the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire in India earlier this year. So far, Fox has signed contracts with several film makers from both the Hindi and Tamil film industry.
