Karan Johar promises a modern Agneepath

Filmmaker Karan Johar, who has taken the responsibility of remaking his father Yash Johar's
1990 film Agneepath, says the new version will be tweaked a bit to make it suitable for the modern audience.

The producer-director has roped in newcomer Karan Malhotra to helm the remake that starred Amitabh Bachchan in the lead.

Johar, who is currently busy promoting home production 'I Hate Luv Storys, is yet to announced a release date for the movie. "The current status around Agneepath is that the film's screenplay has been finalised. I am mighty excited about the work that has gone in because it is beyond anything that I have done in the past," Johar said.

"Keeping today's sensibilities in mind, we are tweaking it appropriately as well. Karan Malhotra is looking at the film differently and hence we wanted to invest a good amount of time in getting the screenplay perfect," he added.

Speculation is rife that either Hrithik Roshan or Abhishek Bachchan will play the role, immortalised by Amitabh. But Johar says he is yet to decide on the star cast. "No one has been finalised yet for 'Agneepath'. When an announcement has to happen, it will be official," Johar said.

The filmmaker says his father was disheartened by the box-office failure of the movie that has now acquired a cult status thanks to Amitabh's 'Angry Youngman' persona. "My father was quite attached to the film and he was truly disheartened when the film didn't work at the box office. It is such an irony that though it didn't connect with the audience then, today it is being hailed as a classic," Johar said.

"It is my ambition and dream to fulfil my father's dream to ensure that the story reaches out to the widest possible audience through theaters."

After the release of Imran Khan-Sonam Kapoor starrer I Hate Luv Storys, Johar will get busy with the sequel toDostana, shooting of which is beginning soon. ”Dostana 2 rolls in July this year and releases in the summer of 2011", said Johar who has entrusted Tarun Mansukhani to hold the megaphone once again for the sequel.

"Abhishek (Bachchan) and John (Abraham) are the leading men while Katrina Kaif would be the female attraction," he added.

What is the status of 'Koochie Koochie Hota Hai', an animation remake of 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' that was also to be directed by Tarun Mansukhani? "We would have to wait a while for that. It is tough to project the exact timelines for it as of now," he said.

What's brewing KJo, Vidya?

Vidya Balan and Karan Johar have often been meeting up either at work or home

Recently, Vidya was seen at Karan’s office in Khar, which is incidentally diagonally opposite to her new house. She was living in Chembur earlier. A couple of days ago, she even went to Karan’s house at Union Park for dinner and was there for four hours. If all goes well, Vidya may soon find herself in one of Karan Johar’s forthcoming productions.

A friend of Vidya’s says, “Vidya’s fine performances in Paa and Ishqiya, which were very different from each other, has made Karan sit up and take notice. Apparently, they are talking about working together.”

The friend confirmed that Karan had invited Vidya to many of his parties even earlier and that Vidya has always loved Karan’s films.

At Karan’s house the two of them spoke about everything under the sun. Karan confirmed that Vidya came to his house for dinner. He said, “A couple of other friends were there too. Vidya is a tremendously talented actress. My company, Dharma Productions, is very keen on working with her. But there is no film as yet. Right now, there’s only I Hate Luv Storys (which releases this Friday) in my mind.

What’s brewing between Karan Johar and Vidya Balan? The latest is that the two have struck a new friendship after meeting and interacting at a recent function. Vidya was spotted sitting next to Karan there.

I am running around all over the place. Then I’ll be working on Dostana 2, which I am producing. I have become more of a producer now. As for a script, which I was supposed to pen in London for my next directorial venture, I wasn’t able to structure it much. In fact, I ended up having five different ideas.”

Recounting her meeting with Karan, Vidya too was gushing praises for the filmmaker, “Karan Johar is one of the wittiest people I have met. He had me in splits. No wonder, he writes beautifully.”

Kareena & Karisma in Karan Johar's next?

Our khabri was in Karan Johar's office recently and guess who did he spot there? Sisters Kareena Kapoor and Karisma Kapoor!

The siblings spent a good one hour with the producer-director in his cabin. While Karisma was dressed in a white salwar-kameez, Kareena was sans any make-up in a sleeveless orange top and black pant.

There was a buzz in the media circles recently that Bebo wanted to work with Lolo. This might just be a casual visit. Though, there is also a possibility that the sisters might star together in one of Karan's upcoming films. If at all this actually happens, it will surely be a wonderful treat for all those who want to see the sizzling sisters on screen!

A sucker for love stories

Karan Johar has no qualms being known as one

Karan Johar's I Hate Luv Storys directed by Punit Malhotra and starring Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor is set to release this Friday. KJo himself loves love stories. He says, "I can never hate love stories. No matter how mushy or cheesy they are. I love stories because of the tremendous rush I get at the end. I am one big sucker for love stories."
Here he picks out the top ten films he loves to love.

Titanic: I love Titanic. Must have seen it eight times. The crackling chemistry between Kate Winslet and Leonardo Di Caprio is amazing! I love tragedies and I was weeping so hard at the end of it. I saw it one night and the next day again. It's my all-time favourite and has all the ingredients of a big Hindi film: rich vs poor, conflict and then a tragic ending.

Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak: When I saw QSQT, I fell in love with Aamir and Juhi and their cute romance. I was in college then and after I saw it, I was bowled over in the manner Juhi spoke in the film. At the risk of sounding mad, I'd quote her dialogues and would say with 'aap' to everyone. There was a freshness about Juhi. Again, I wept buckets after I saw the film. It shattered me for weeks.

Bobby: I must have seen Bobby more times than I have seen my parents. I just love the magic of Raj Kapoor and they way he presented Dimple Kapadia. Rajji made such a young film at that age. It's said he was inspired by Archie comics but there's so much energy otherwise in each and every character including Premnath's. And what a launch for his son Rishi Kapoor. I thank Raj Kapoor for giving us an actress like Dimple. Bobby is the mother of Hindi film love stories and the bible of Indian cinema.

Pretty Woman: No matter how many times I watch Pretty Woman, I have to watch the end more than once. It's the most viewer-friendly love story and the magic between Richard Gere and Juila Roberts again sparks the romantic element in us. I love the end. It's like a fairy tale. When Gere climbs the ladder to propose to Julia, it makes you want to do just the same!

Love Story: I love the Hollywood flick, Love Story and would keep watching it on our VHS at home till my parents came into my room to drag me out. I was nine years old and needed therapy after watching the film. It was so sweet, romantic and sad that it scarred me for life. I'm a weeper. I've never cried so much.

Ankhiyon Ke Jharokon Se: It was the Hindi version of Love Story and I have the title song on it in my iPod. I have to hear it at least once a week. Both the versions are my favorites and I love them to death. I cried and wept after watching the films. It was cathartic. When I watch these films all my pent-up memories as a child are released.

Jab We Met: I can't speak much about contemporary love stories because there haven't been many spectacular ones in the last decade but I did enjoy Jab We Met. I loved the dialogues, the way Imtiaz wrote the conversations between the two protagonists Shahid and Kareena. Also when Imtiaz wrote Geet he created a fantastic new iconic character. Kareena was exuberant and fantastic.

Awaara: The love track between Raj Kapoor and Nargis is just outstanding! The sheer sensuality and romance that exudes between them in every scene is absolutely unachievable. They are the most brilliantly captured love moments on celluloid. Never before or after has there ever been such a combination of romance and sensuality on the Indian silver screen.

When Harry Met Sally: It's modern-age, contemporary, vibrant, edgy and well written. It's iconic in its content n its performances and was like a pillar of romance truly in the 90s ” a pillar that remains immovable till today.

Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge: It's strange the way we look at modern-day love stories. DDLJ is sheer genius and a film on love, drama and contemporary romance. Perhaps that's why the love story between Raj and Simran makes DDLJ the longest running film in the history of cinema. However many times we watch DDLJ we can never get enough. Raj and Simran continue to be the iconic lovers of India today.

Kareena and Imran in KJo’s next Hollywood remake?

The lovely size zero oomph quotient Kareena seems to be the ultimate choice of Karan Johar when it comes to make Hollywood remakes. Kareena who is already working in Karan Johar’s remake of ‘Stepmom’ with Kajol is strongly rumored to star opposite the studious Imran in Karan Johar’s next Hollywood remake of ‘What Happened in Vegas One Night’ the mad caper starred Hollywood hottie Cameron Diaz and Asthon Kutcher.

Hmmmmm, the pair seems delicious as we all know how good Kareena is in her comic timings and how studious Imran can be with the perfectionist ‘mamujaan’ our dear Aamir always ready to give his valuable tips.

Though the production house is ‘mum’ on this issue, close hands are damn sure that this Jodi is currently in Karan Johar’s mind for the film which will again be directed by a newcomer.

Imran & Sonam's Chemistry USP of IHLS: Karan Johar

The unusual pairing of Sonam Kapoor and Imran Khan in 'I Hate Luv Storys' has generated quite a buzz and filmmaker Karan Johar who is producing the rom-com says that it is the freshness of the two young actors which is the USP of the film.

Johar says that the film and its lead pair are sure to click with the younger generation who no more accept the old fashioned ideals of love.

"The two form a very fresh pair and that should work for the audience. In fact ever since the promotion of IHLS began, there has been excellent feedback all over. People are reacting to the freshness factor. There is a youthful energy which they bring and that is pretty much visible in the film," the filmmaker told PTI.

The film which parodies the romantic cliches of Bollywood sees Sonam playing a 'filmi' romantic while Imran plays a cynic who hates love stories.

Both Imran and Sonam are new entrants in the industry and neither have delivered a hit in the past year, but Johar is sure that their chemistry will work wonders.

Imran didn't have much luck running in his favour after 'Luck' and 'Kidnap' and Sonam too is yet to find her groove despite biggies like 'Saawariya' and 'Delhi 6' behind her.

"Imran has already shown so much promise in his very first film 'Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa'. On the other hand everyone knows that Sonam is beautiful and good at playing the girl-next-door," said Johar.

"However, while she was very Indian in 'Delhi 6' and 'Saawariya', there is a different kind of girl that she plays in 'IHLS'. She is presented in such an avatar for the first time," he added.

The film pokes fun at the 'cheesy' treatment given to love stories in Hindi cinema and takes potshots at some of Johar's own movies including 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham' and 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'.

"Today there is a lot of cynicism attached to love. The old fashioned love is no longer accepted. Even if people see that happening, they find it so unbelievable," said Johar adding that when director Punit Malhotra narrated the subject of IHLS to him, he immediately said yes.

"I have met a lot of youngsters who believe that old fashioned love stories are a thing of the past. No wonder, there has been quite some time since we saw an iconic love story. The last big one which the entire nation liked was 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'. Before that it was 'Maine Pyaar Kiya' while in the recent times I can only think of 'Jab We Met' to some extent," he said.

Though Johar admits that love stories are not finding much acceptance from the audience now a days, he is confident that IHLS will work.

"Well, ours is a nice youthful attempt and even though we are not selling it as a out of the world original story, we know that it will work. I know that audience is hungry for different love stories and it will connect with the film," said Johar about the IHLS which releases on July 2.

I'm no longer a young filmmaker: Karan Johar

Ace filmmaker Karan Johar, 38, is bogged down by his physical problems and feels he is no longer "the young filmmaker" as most people address him as.

"First round of physiotherapy... signs of ageing... first the grey hair and now the bad back... no longer the 'young' filmmaker," Karan posted on social networking site Twitter.

Karan, who made films like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and My Name Is Khan, has been in New York for a long time to find inspiration for his next project. He even celebrated his birthday there on Wednesday.

KJo's strange superstition!

Heard Karan Johar’s office subscribes to a strange superstition. If the heroine of their film has a fall during the shooting, the film usually becomes a super hit.

Kajol fell off a bicycle during the shooting of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and then again when Kabhie Khushi Kabhi Gham was being shot. Preity Zinta apparently had a fall while filming Kal Ho Na Ho and the latest is that Sonam Kapoor fell into cow dung while filming I Hate Luv Storys. “The guys at Dharma are actually relieved that Sonam fell because chances are bright the film will work very well,” says a source.

While Karan and co will certainly not push one of their heroines, causing them to trip or fall, they are okay if the girls in their films are fallen women. Hit hai toh sab fit hai.
