Preity compliments Kajol’s performance in ‘My Name is Khan'

The world of showbiz may be full of catfights and raging egos but that does not stop actress Preity Zinta from complementing Kajol on her "outstanding" performance in 'My Name Is Khan'.

With Bollywood's golden couple Shahrukh Khan and Kajol coming together after almost a decade, the film is one of the most awaited releases of 2010, but Preity has already given her verdict.

"I saw some of the film's (My Name Is Khan) footage and she is outstanding in it and so is Shahrukh and I think it will be great movie," Preity, who was here in the capital as the brand ambassador of Vatika Enriched Almond Hair Oil, said.

Preity can even bet on the fact that no body could have done the role better than Kajol.
"Look at Kajal. She goes and gets married, has a kid. She disappears for three years and she comes back does some thing like 'My Name Is Khan' and she is so good in the film. I can bet that none of the actresses can stand in front of her," Preity said.

Karan Johar directed 'My Name is Khan' is set to hit the theaters in Feb next year and stars Shah Rukh as Rizvan Khan, an unconventional hero, who embarks on an incredible journey in order to win back the love of his life (Kajol).

And along the way, his unique brand of goodness and humanity touches the lives of many and inspires a nation.

KJo will make films to spread AIDS awareness after MNIK's release

After My Name is Khan releases in February next year, Karan Johar plans on making a feature-length film or a series of short films on AIDS -- inspired by Parmeshwar Godrej. Karan was recently seen at Godrej's Heroes project's new communication campaign, HIV and Soul Cages last week.

Talking about it, Karan says, "I have been associated with Heroes for many years now. I joined the project inspired by Parmeshwar's passion for spreading awareness about AIDS. I plan to make a full-length feature film or a series of short films on the subject after MNIK releases next year.

It's especially painful to see the plight of children infected with the virus and the stigma and rampant discrimination toward them. Even after creating awareness, it's shocking to see the high levels of illiteracy about the disease in urban circles."

The director says he will be available for any of the project's initiatives; he wants to take it one step further. "I would definitely like to do much more. Dharma has a pool of talent and apart from entertainment in cinema, it's our responsibility to incorporate socially relevant topics. Entertainment can't be the be-all and end of all films. It's imperative to entertain but entertain with a purpose."

Making a point

Socially relevant films might not be commercially popular. Would that stop him from making films with a message? "Commercial setbacks always disappointing but even more disappointing is making a film that just made no point at all. I will not make documentaries or something extremely serious; that's not me. I will always make films that have a certain drama or the connectivity to the audience wouldn't be there. There's a certain madness in me which will remain as the core of all the films I do."

Nadiad man accuses Karan Johar of stealing Dostana script

A Nadiad-Based scriptwriter has filed a case of copyright violation against Hindi film producer and director Karan Johar in a Mumbai Sessions Court, accusing him of using his script for the film Dostana released last year.

Jay Kumar Vaghela said in his petition that he had submitted the script to a Mumbai-based film company — Bioscope — on July 17, 2008, and that the company used it without giving him the credit. According to Vaghela’s counsel Dharmendra Singh, legal notices were initially sent to producer Johar, director Tarun Mansukhani and Bioscope for using some parts from his script. “But they did not respond to the notice. Therefore, we filed a case against them (last week) under the Copyright Act of 1949,” he Singh.

Vaghela said he used to submit his scripts to Bioscope for selection.

The plot revolves around two men who go to the Bhauchraj Mata festival at Nadiad, as it as a meeting point for members of the gay community. “They meet a girl, Sapna, during the dance competition, where one of the protagonists, Jay, falls in love with her. Later, she comes to know that Jay and his friend are not gay,” he said.

Karan wants to work with Shahid, Deepika

Karan Johar is one among the young breed of filmmakers who has set a new trend in Bollywood. His movies be it those directed by him or produced by him have always been entertaining and enthralling.

Karan Johar, who worked with the likes of Shahrukh Khan, is a great admirer of the entertainment medium. His recent co-production venture Kurbaan starring Saif Ali Khan and Kareena is making right noise at the box office.

But Karan has a desire. In his Twitter page, the young film personality said, ' I have been inundated with tweets to make a film with Shahid and Deepika...they both are great! and would love to work with them'.

Shahid Kapoor is the latest sensation in Bollywood thanks to hits in Jab We Met and Kaminey while Deepika is going gaga with her success.

Karan Johar-Pritish Nandy at war!

Guess who the new Twitter frenemies are? Film-makers Karan Johar and Pritish Nandy!

They lash out against each other on a social networking site after one criticises the other's film.

Both are quite active on Twitter -- Karan a lot less than Pritish, who is a veteran by now. Earlier, Pritish ran into a bit of trouble when he spoke against Kareena Kapoor's performance and appearance in Kambhaqt Ishq.

Reacting to Pritish's comments, Kareena had then told DNA that he seemed to have too much time on his hands. Now, it's the turn of her producer Karan to back that statement.

A few days ago, Pritish posted on Twitter a review of Kurbaan from a website. The review ripped apart Karan's latest release. Not one to take this lightly, Karan tweets right back making a dig at Pritish, in his usual polite manner -- "Surprised how much time Pritish Nandy has to uplink google reader updates...must take a lesson of time management from his busy schedule."

Interestingly, not long ago, Karan had tweeted about how he has decided to follow people he doesn't like. Karan even follows Ram Gopal Varma, with whom he has always shared a love-hate relationship. He had told DNA then, "I have never hated people, but yes, I do get annoyed by some of them. I sometimes don't agree to what they tweet, but now it doesn't irritate me, it amuses me. I laugh at them."

But looks like this time Karan is not amused!

Kurbaan is the story of Ehsaan and Avantika, says Kareena

Before releasing the Kurbaan, the lead actress Kareena Kapoor has asserted once again that this is the movie of Ehsaan and Avantika.

She says, “As an audience, I want people to forget Saif and Kareena Kapoor and see the film for Ehsaan and Avantika.”

She says further, “Really, this is not some candy flossmini skirt love story… it is a love story, yes, but intense and complicated, and beautifully woven with terrorism to be a thriller.”

When asked about how did she feel doing a movie like Kurbaan with Saif, she says “Switching off Saif and Kareena and switching of Ehsaan and Avantika was complicated, difficult, but in the end, that is what made us select this film.”

Kareena's bare-back poster irks Shiv Sena

Another Karan Johar release is facing the music, this time from Shiv Sena. The party has objected to the bare-backed posters of Kareena
Kapoor from the film ‘Kurbaan’.

More than 100 Shiv Sainiks took to streets and tore down posters of the film in Juhu, Marol and other parts of Andheri on Friday. A month back, MNS had objected to the use of the Mumbai’s old name, Bombay, in Johar’s ‘Wake Up Sid’; he had to bend over backwards to the chauvinists and the film had to be screened with a disclaimer.

Friday’s protests were led by Sena activists Jitendra Janawale in Juhu and Subhash Kanta Sawant in Marol. Sawant said: ‘‘We objected to the posters as they showed the actress semi-nude and we found to be in very bad taste. It violates our Indian culture.’’

The Sainiks also put a sari around Kareena in some of the posters. A group of Sainiks even headed for Kareena’s residence and wanted to present a sari to her. But a police officer said: ‘‘We deployed our people near the actress’s house but nothing untoward happened.’’ Kareena was said to be out for a shooting and was not at home.

Additional commissioner of police (West) Amitabh Gupta said the Khar police station had been asked to register a case against the offencers. An industry insider said political parties were picking on soft targets to get some mileage and the MNS’s impressive showing in the recent Maharashtra assembly polls was ‘‘forcing’’ the Sena to look for rabble-rousing issues.

‘‘The film industry has always been a soft target as the government does not take action against political parties,’’ the industry insider said.

‘‘The government took a proactive decision in only one case, providing Anurag Kashyap security; but that was because they knew that the director would never apologise to MNS,’’ another Bollywood insider said. Kashyap, reacting to a question from a news channel about his film ‘DevD’ being vulgar, said RajThackeray’s words were much more vulgar than his films.

Rensil to show Kurbaan to his guru Mani Ratnam

Gone are the days when filmmakers used to take their movie’s prints to religious places a little before the release of the film. Director Rensil D’Silva has plans of showing his debut film Kurbaan, which releases next week, to his guru Mani Ratnam first.

Buzz up!Rensil wants Mani to see the film before anyone else and then bless him. The director is a fan of Mani Ratnam and has worked with him on Raavan. Once the final print of the film was ready, Rensil decided to show it to Mani.

Mani is however shooting for Raavan in Hyderabad, so, it's not sure if he will come to Mumbai or not. In case Mani can’t come to Mumbai, Rensil will take the prints to Hyderabad.

Kurbaan is an adult film, certifies Censor Board

Rensil D’Silva’s Kurbaan is in trouble. Censor Board has issued an ‘A’ certificate to the film following Saif and Kareena’s sizzling scene. In the promo and the first look, Saif and Kareena was shown topless and hot on bed. The intimate scene between Saif and Kareena made the Censor Board to take this strict decision.

The film is on the verge to release and Censor Board has taken this decision at this eleventh hour. They felt some scenes are obscene and not suitable for all age groups. Rensil D’Silva convinced the Censor Board authorities to issue a ‘U’ or ‘U/A’ certificate but they didn't accepted.

Regional Officer of the Censor Board, Vinayak Azad confirmed the news. The film has terrorism at the backdrop.

Tarun Mansukhani vows to not shave beard till he completes scripting Dostana 2

In the midst of scripting the sequel to Dostana, Tarun Mansukhani has vowed that he will not shave till the final draft of the film is ready.

"Initially, I had decided that I would go clean shaven after half the story is ready. But now, I will let the facial fuzz remain till Dostana 2's script is fully complete," he says.

The writer-director has also become a nocturnal creature as he works at nights. "My day begins around 9 pm and winds up by 10 am the following morning, that's when I go to sleep."

Tarun prefers to work in the hours of darkness because there is no disturbance at all. "During the day time, there is a lot of hustle-bustle, there are calls and visitors. But after midnight, everything is quiet and calm. I can also work faster. It is just me and my laptop."

He makes his way to the Dharma Productions office at Khar by 9 pm and works all night, "I don't nap at all. I tank up on my cups of coffee and except for the security folk there is no one around," informs Tarun, who is also the director of Kootchie Kootchie Hota Hain, the animated version of Karan Johar's Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

However, his nights at work means that he does not see his wife Karuna for days on end. "She is a teacher at the Aditya Birla World School at Tardeo and leaves our Bandra home at around 7 am a time when I have not yet returned from office. And when she gets back in the evening I am asleep! By the time I get going to office, it is the end of the day for her."

He adds, however, that his wife has been extremely adjusting and encouraging. "She knows my line of work and the hours we put in. She's very patient. I try and spend time with her on weekends."

Kareena ka Dostana

After Aishwarya Rai Bachchan refused to do Dostana, the makers thought of casting Kareena, but Abhishek Bachchan put his foot down because of his sour relationship with the Kapoor family and recommended Priyanka Chopra instead.

The times have changed now, and Kareena and Abhishek, who could have been sister and brother-in-law had Karisma married Junior B, have decided to let bygones be bygones and work together. They made up at KJo’s birthday bash a while back.

If Bebo bags the film, it will benefit her professionally, commercially and personally.

A source tells us, ‘Kareena and Karan Johar also had a tiff during the time of Kal Ho Naa Ho. After the success of K3G, he offered the film to her, but she quoted a very high price, due to which Preity Zinta stepped in her shoes. The two have kissed and made up since, and they even shot for a paint ad together. KJo wanted to cast her in Dostana, but AB didn’t want to work with her. Now, Kareena has shot for Kurbaan and she is also shooting for the remake of Stepmom. If she bags Dostana 2, she will have a trilogy with Dharma, which few stars (read SRK) can boast of. It will also end her long-standing cold war with John Abraham, whom she had once called ‘expressionless.’ Also, Bebo can do any kind of role, as she is an expressive and versatile actor.’

Katrina is also in the running for the role, but it looks like Kareena, with her Bollywood royalty clout, will beat her to it and Kat won’t get the cream.

Director Tarun Mansukhani denied casting Katrina altogether, saying that the script wasn’t complete as yet, but he neither confirmed nor denied Kareena’s presence in the film, which will go into production in London next year. He added, "I want to make D2 funnier than the first. Casting someone who has a flair for comedy is important, so it is really a toss about whom to take for the female lead, and I am not ruling out one of either, but let's wait till I make an official announcement."

Kareena Kapoor having a great time with Kajol

Two of the most talented actresses in Bollywood, Kajol and Kareena, are enjoying each other’s company these days. The actresses, who are shooting together for Karan Johar’s Hindi remake of Hollywood hit ‘Step Mom’, along with Arjun Rampal and three kids are sharing a great rapport while working on the project together.

Kareena has always been all praises for co-star Kajol, as she thinks that Kajol is magic on screen. A source reveals that on November 16, both the actresses would leave for Australia where they will wrap up a major portion of this much-anticipated venture.

Reports reveal that Kajol had to try hard to work out her dates in such a way that she can get her daughter Nysa to spend a few days at her shooting schedule in Oz.

KJo’s ‘Step Mom’ is slated for release in 2010.

‘My Name Is Khan’ set for Valentine’s week release

“My Name Is Khan” — Bollywood’s favourite on-screen couple Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol’s first film together in eight years — is set to release Feb 12 next year.
Directed by Karan Johar, the film will open in theatres in India and over 40 countries including the US, Canada, Britain, Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East, said a press release from Johar’s Dharma Productions.

“My Name is Khan” features Shah Rukh as Rizvan Khan, an unconventional hero who embarks on a journey across America to win back the love of his life. It shows how, along the way, his unique personality touches the lives of many and inspires a nation.

“I keep setting out to do something different with my films, but the one constant that remains is my desire to continue to explore the many ways in which two people can fall in love and stay in love regardless of any or every challenge against them,” said Karan.

The film also marks a re-teaming of Johar and Shah Rukh after three years — their last outing together was “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna”.

Johar has made his film in association with Fox STAR Studios, 20th Century Fox International and Fox Searchlight Pictures.

While Fox STAR Studios will market and distribute the film in India, Fox Searchlight Pictures will release it in the US. The distribution of the movie outside India and the US will be taken care of by Twentieth Century Fox International.

According to Vijay Singh, CEO Fox Star Studios, the film is drawing a “hugely positive response from exhibitors across the world” for the “coming together of Shah Rukh, Karan and Kajol”.

“It is a big event for Bollywood audiences across the world and their fan base is eagerly awaiting the release. But what makes ‘My Name is Khan’ a special film is that it brings together the finest Indian talent with a powerful story that has relevance for audiences everywhere,” added Singh.

Kareena and I were depressed during ‘Kurbaan’ shoot: Saif Khan

Bollywood actors often describe their shooting schedule as a picnic. But “cold and depressing” is what Saif Ali Khan has to say about the US shoot of “Kurbaan”, speaking for not just himself but also girlfriend and co-star Kareena Kapoor.

” ‘Kurbaan’ was hard work. Period. In fact, the Philadelphia schedule was plain hell. It wasn’t anything like a picnic shooting for the film,” shudders Saif, who is glad that the film is complete and ready for release.

Saif says, “It gets dark there at 4 p.m. itself. Moreover, it’s so cold and at minus 10 degrees it can actually get really depressing. Since we were shooting in sync sound, it was extremely difficult to get the pitch and tone right while delivering our dialogues.”

The film by Rensil D’Souza also stars Vivek Oberoi, Dia Mirza, Om Puri and Kirron Kher and will be released Nov 20.

It was during the shoot of the film that Saif and Kareena got news of the terror attack in Mumbai last year. “Because of that, it was so difficult to concentrate on the film’s shoot. Thankfully, Bebo (Kareena Kapoor) was there with me at that time but still both of us were very depressed,” says Saif.

As it was quite cold in Philadelphia, Saif and Kareena were required to wear layers of clothing. Later, for continuity purpose, they had to wear the same clothes in the summer of Mumbai.

Saif and others also had a hard time adjusting to the locations chosen for the film’s shoot.

“We were shooting in a tube and that’s anything but fun,” he remembers. “We had to shoot a subway sequence but being in a tube for hours at a stretch is like being in an underground prison. Really, it is very disorienting. Who says shooting for a film is like being in a picnic? ‘Kurbaan’ certainly wasn’t one.”

When asked to name one film which was fun to shoot, Saif talks of Abbas-Mustan-directed “Race”.

“Now that’s what I call as a real picnic”, he says. “Doing the film was quite easy since the working hours were quite comfortable while locations were nice, easy and comfortable. It was really simple work and I enjoyed a lot. It was really entertaining to drive fast cars, saying cool lines, be a hero and stuff alike.

“On the other hand, ‘Kurbaan’ has me playing this complicated character which only makes it further difficult for an actor.”

Is KURBAAN really similar to NEW YORK or FANAA?

Film maker Karan Johar has taken a new stance when it comes to questions around his KURBAAN bearing similarity to NEW YORK or FANAA, both of which also dealt with terrorism. Instead of making straight forward declaration of his film being 'truly different', he is leaving it to audiences to go and find out similarities, if any.

"That's because this is not the first time that it is happening to a film coming from Dharma Productions", says Karan in a calm tone sans any sense of irritation, "When WAKE UP SID was being made, people asked whether it had any similarities to LAKSHYA. Now when the movie has released and is finding so much appreciation, the same people are coming back and telling me that 'Oh, this was one was so different."

He has quite a few other examples to state as well. Before their release, his KAL HO NA HO was said to be a remake of ANAND while KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA appeared to have it's germ in SILSILA.

KURBAAN is a romance set against the backdrop of global terrorism. Kareena plays Avantika, a teacher from a University in Delhi, who moves base to New York due to a personal emergency. During this period, she meets a Professor - Ehsaan Khan, played by Saif Ali Khan. Love blossoms and they get married. All hell breaks loose when a series of incidents suck Avantika and Ehsaan into a vortex of danger and intrigue.

Karan Johar, Producer, KURBAAN commented, "KURBAAN has a global theme and will be appreciated specially by audiences abroad. This is an opportunity for us to engage with the audiences outside India and give them a glimpse into the movie."

Siddharth Roy Kapur, CEO, UTV Motion Pictures, Distributor of KURBAAN said, "KURBAAN has created immense anticipation with its curtain raising teaser and music. With Saif and Kareena visiting London, Dubai and New York - we are ensuring that audiences in those territories get an opportunity to meet their favourite stars and hear them narrate their experience of working on this film. We are very confident that the movie will attract audiences globally because of its strong subject."

Kareenas spirit in Kurbaan Hua video

While shooting for a music video for Kurbaan on Tuesday, at first, director Rensil D’Silva and Saif Ali Khan decided that Kareena was not needed for the video. But later when they felt the need for her presence in the video, Saif came up with a unique idea and suggested to Rensil that she could be part of the video at least in spirit.

Earlier, Rensil was very clear that he only and only wanted Saif in the video. They shot for the song at Mukesh Mills in Mumbai. It was conceptualized and choreographed by Rensil and Bosco respectively. It is different from the usual music videos and is not at all flashy. It features Saif and the background dancers in spiritual poses and the video is more spirit than body.

Shooting for it reminded Rensil of his early days when he used to shoot music videos. The shoot went on fine until they realized that Kareena was needed. That’s when Saif came up with his idea and Rensil used some of Kareena’s most dramatic shots from the film as passing images in the background. Both Saif and Rensil agree that it has made a great difference to the video of 'Kurbaan Hua'.

Kareena and Saif to meet George W Bush to discuss world terrorism

For a couple that is often touted as the desi Brangelina, Saif and Kareena seem to be giving new reasons to keep the comparisons alive and kicking with each passing day. Following the foreign couple’s footsteps closely, Saifeena will now be seen taking up the cause of terrorism with none other than former US President Geroge W Bush in a one on one discussion here in the capital.

With their film, ‘Kurbaan’ - centered on world terrorism, all set to release, the move may seem like more of a marketing gimmick but the couple is quick to defend all such claims.

Talking to a news daily, the lovebirds raised their concern about the present terrorism scenario. As for speaking at the conference goes, Saif is already ready with his list of pointers while Kareena plans to be spontaneous.

Talking about the conference, Kareena told a news daily, "I`m a very spontaneous person. It`s like that with my acting. It would be like that when I meet Mr Bush. Jo dil mein hai woh bolungi. By now, I`ve gained enough confidence to be able to speak at such summits with some amount of confidence. Nowadays, you can`t afford to have your head buried in the sand. You have to know what`s happening in the world around you."

Now that’s the way to go gal!

Saif-Kareena in the shoes of Shahrukh-Tabu

The much-hyped film Kurbaan would star Shahrukh Khan, Tabu and Sanjay Dutt if Karan Johar went ahead with his plan seven years ago. However, he went on to do other projects, and the film eventually went to Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Vivek Oberoi.

Karan revealed that he wanted Shahrukh, Tabu and Sanjay to play the lead roles with Nikhil Advani as the director. The film was named Kaal then. On narrating the story to Rensil D’Silva, the screenplay he prepared turned out into a different film all together. Thus born the title Kurbaan with Saif and Kareena in the lead roles.

Karan left Kurbaan behind after he went on to make films like Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham in 2001 and later produced Kal Ho Naa Ho

Katrina: I’d like to do a film for Dharma Productions

The babe is roosting at the helm of cine field these days, grabbing attentions and offers as well.

Started off as a straight faced model in ‘Boom’, Katrina Kaif set her career straight instead by the way she performs and choice of movies. While her ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’ is going to hit the screens next Friday, the trailers of ‘De Dana Dan’ too look promising.

Katrina Kaif seems to have worked with some of the laudable filmmakers. However if one goes over her portfolio, Katrina doesn’t have a movie yet with Bollywood’s favourite banner or with Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra. Said Katrina,

Karan thinks out of the box. On the one hand, he makes a 'Dostana' and then a path-breaking film like 'Wake Up Sid'. Naturally, I’d like to do a film for his banner. Likewise, working with Adi is a pleasure. He has a young unit and they work with clockwork precision. Doing a film for them is being on a school camp, but completely result oriented.

Hmm, hope the gori catches her dreams soon!

Bruna Abdullah To Star In Karan Johar’s ‘I Hate Luv Storys’

Brazilian model Bruna Abdullah is getting ready to make her Bollywood debut with Karan Johar’s I Hate Luv Storys. The film also stars Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor.

Bruna who made her Bollywood appearance in the item song Rehem Kare, in Anubhav Sinha’s Cash, was offered the role after Dia Mirza declined the cameo. Bruna has started preparing for the cameo role. She is concentrating on improving her diction and dialogue delivery. The news of the actress for the role was confirmed by Bruna’s manager at first but later denied.

Vivek sidelined by Saifeena but he hasn't said a word!

The promos of Karan Johar's production Kurbaan, starring Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan, and directed by Rensil D'Silva, have already created a furore.

The steamy promos, sizzling with mind-blowing chemistry between the real-life couple, are creating hype for the film - which is great for the business. But, few people noticed that Vivek Oberoi is also a part of it. He, in fact, plays a pivotal role in the film.

Vivek is barely seen in the promos and though he talked about the film during its shoot, post the promos he has gone mum.

Now either he is in shock about being sidelined or he already knew it would be so with Saifeena being hot property.

Maybe he's quiet because he knows the film might do a lot of good to his career? Well, we are happy he isn't going over the top either way.

I’m over and above box office today: Karan Johar

Never mind that his production house Dharma Productions has just delivered a big hit in “Wake Up Sid”. Director-producer Karan Johar says he has matured over the years and box office collections are no longer the only driving factor for him.

“Frankly, I am over and above box office today. With age and some dose of maturity coming in, I truly believe that I have grown as a filmmaker and hence I am not just looking at crores out there,” Karan, 37, told IANS in an interview.

Karan has half a dozen films lined up for release in the months to come. After “Wake Up Sid”, debutant Rensil D’Souza’s “Kurbaan” is next. He is also speeding up Tarun Mansukhani’s animation flick “Koochie Koochie Hota Hai” and “Dostana 2″.

Siddharth Malhotra’s “Stepmom” remake is already on floors while debutant director Punit Malhotra’s “I Hate Love Stories” is in pre-production stage. Newcomer Karan Malhotra has been entrusted with directing an “Agneepath” remake.

Karan’s own directorial venture “My Name Is Khan” would be releasing in early 2010.

With so many projects in the pipeline, is it really easy for him not to think about box office collections?

“I guess numbers just get lost after a point in time while the quality of a product is remembered. I have learnt that the remembrance a film gets is far more important than what you end up gaining in the first weekend.

“A living example is ‘Wake Up Sid’. Yes, it opened well but what is even more heartening is that it is still being loved and watched weeks after its release. That excites me,” said Karan.

His claim comes with enough validation here. After the mega Diwali weekend that saw “Blue”, “All The Best” and “Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna” fighting for screen space, “Wake Up Sid” was kept on hold. The Ranbir Kapoor-Konkona Sen Sharma-starrer did have two bountiful weeks.

Karan is happy to be following the mantra of making quality films without worrying much about the cash register.

No wonder many first-time filmmakers working with him are happy to be in an environment that challenges and motivates them to make something worth remembering.

“I never ask my directors to give me a film that would fetch me Rs.80, 100 or 120 crore. Once you do that, you only end up putting pressure on the poor guy. Instead, I want them to focus entirely on the subject in front of them and leave the box office in the hands of audiences.

“This is what Ayan Mukerji did with ‘Wake Up Sid’ and look at how he has passed with flying colours, both critically and commercially,” said Karan with a tone of appreciation.

Karan Johar: I prefer first time film makers

There is something about first time film makers that excites Karan Johar. For his production house Dharma Productions, most of the directors chosen by him are those who are making a film for the first time. Ayan Mukerji has given a successful WAKE UP SID, Rensil D'Souza seems all set for a success with KURBAAN while Tarun Mansukhani, who gave a HIT last year with DOSTANA, is making two more movies for Karan - animation flick KOOCHIE KOOCHIE HOTA HAI and DOSTANA 2.

"That's the 'mantra'", says Karan in an unabashed tone, "I prefer first time film makers to work with me as there is certain hunger in them. They want to succeed and it's the freshness in their approach which makes the entire experience of making a film all the more exciting. I am happy with this strategy so far and don't want established film makers."

This is the reason why entire 2010 would see Dharma Productions unleashing one film after another, all of which would have a first time director at the helm of affairs. Other than Karan's own MY NAME IS KHAN, there would be Siddharth Malhotra coming up with STEPMOM remake, Punit Malhotra making his debut with I HATE LOVE STORIES and Karan Malhotra beginning work on AGNEEPATH remake.

How does the director in him, who has been making films for 11 years now (Karan made his debut with KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI in 1998) keep away from the temptation of giving 'creative inputs' with so many newcomers at the helm of affairs?

"You have to believe me when I say that I allow them to make their own films", he smiles, "Eventually if I come in their way and do everything then what's the point? In that case neither them nor me would ever have objectivity of the work that we do."

Kareena dares to bare for Kurbaan

Although Kareena thinks it is much ado about nothing, "Not once did I feel awkward while shooting any scene for the film. It's always easier to shoot for romantic and passionate scenes with someone you are dating, because of the comfort level.

Also I am very close to Rensil D'Silva (the director) while Karan is like family and I trusted them completely. I knew whatever they shot would come out very classy. And the poster proves that."

It's all symbolic
She goes on to say that she and Saif both love the poster, "Everything is symbolic including Saif's wound and my wet hair it represents passion, sensuality and emotional violence. Kurbaan is a love story with an undertone of violence a combination of love and violence. Everyone - from my mom to my sister Karisma is eagerly waiting for Kurbaan to release. It will remain one of my top three favourite films along with Omkara and Jab We Met.

Producer talk
Karan Johar says, "Kareena and Saif were very comfortable with the romantic scenes. It also helped in the passionate romantic scenes as Saif and Kareena are a couple. That helped them in the comfort zone. They are also very credible, talented and professional actors who can convey passion and sensuality with conviction. Bebo and Saif had trust in our aesthetic sense and our campaign while Rensil's vision and Rahul Nanda's (publicity designer) expertise has made it a mind-blowing poster."

Kurbaan to be released early

urbaan will be at a screen near you an entire seven days earlier! The release date for the Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor starrer has been brought up as a wise Karan Johar has realised that it does a new film no favours to be released into the competition of a multiple release Friday. Especially when the film has cost big bucks to make!

Consequently, Kurbaan will release on November 20 instead of November 27 to avoid a clash with Priyadarshan’s Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif starrer De Dana Dan.

Director Rensil D’Silva said, “We will be releasing Kurbaan on November 20 as no other film was scheduled to release on that day. We want to avoid a clash with any other film. Why not release solo when we have an empty slot? Clashes don’t help anyone.”

A spokesperson for UTV, Siddharth Roy Kapoor, confirmed the change of schedule and stated, “Nov 20 is a better release window as we get a clean week, clear of any competition.”

Shah Rukh Khan walks ramp, Hrithik Roshan, Jaya Bachchan cheer him up!!

When Shah Rukh Khan, the King Khan of bollywood walked the ramp for ace film director Karan Johar at the grand finale of couture week, the cheering crowd had Hrithik Roshan and Jaya Bachchan among others, making it abundantly clear who stands where in the Salman-Shah--Rukh Khan game of one up man ship.

The presence of Jaya Bachchan, one of the important members of Bachchan camp in the cheering crowd of Shah Rukh Khan, is being taken in the industry as the coming closer of King Khan and Bachchans.

Besides Jaya Bachchan, other biggies like Yash Chopra and Uday Chopra, Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Kajol were also present to encourage Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan walking the ramp.

The viewers were also surprised by the cool confidence shown by Gauri Khan, Shah Rukh Khan’s wife, who was walking the ramp for the first time. But, she was not nervous at all, and in fact, showed herself to be as a cool and confident professional in her new avatar.

However, the industry was more interested in knowing who was present during Shah Rukh Khan’s show and what did it mean for the future of bollywood. This was especially so, as Shah Rukh Khan was seen to be isolated by Salman Khan when he had successfully assembled almost all of bollywood for his ramp walk at the couture week earlier.

But the presence of Jaya Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan and Yash Chopra clearly sent a strong message to Salman Khan camp that if need be Shah Rukh Khan can bank on the support of the first family of bollywood, the Bachchans.

The buzz doing the rounds in the industry is that Bachchans favor Shah Rukh Khan more out of compulsion than their liking for him. In fact, when Bachchans have to choose one of the two camps headed by Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, they would always go for SRK.

This is so despite the fact that it was Shah Rukh Khan who had snatched ‘Kaun Banega Crorpeati’ from Big B and started the long drawn cold war between two of biggest bollywood icons. The reason is obviously Salman Khan’s past relation with Aishwarya Rai, who is now Bachchan bahu, and would not approve of any relationship with macho Khan.

Manish Malhotra to direct Saif-Bebo

Manish Malhotra - the man who changed Bollywood fashion is all set to make his directorial debut. And what's more, he's roped in his good friends Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor to play the lead roles.

The film all set to go on the floors in mid 2010 will be produced by Karan Johar, again a very good friend of Malhotra.

When contacted, Manish confirmed the news saying, "Yes, its true. I am going to make my debut as a director. I will direct a film for Karan Johar's Dharma Productions and it is going to be a commercial venture. It is a very emotional subject and I don't want anyone else to direct the film. Nothing else has been planned as yet. There's still time to decide the cast and crew as it will go on floors next year."

Manish's first step into Bollywood was Swarg. He designed Juhi Chawla's costumes. He later shot to fame with Urmila Matondkar's makeover in Rangeela and Karisma Kapoor in all the David Dhawan films.

However, Manish is currently busy working for Sohail Khan's Main Aurr Mrs Khanna, Anthony D'Souza's Blue and Shankar's Enthiram.

Saif, Bebo's kiss breaks records!

Their real life chemistry would now create magic on screen. Saif and Kareena have created a record for the longest kiss on camera.

According to unit sources, Their kiss seemed to be never ending, which was filmed recently for their upcoming movie Kurbaan.

The kiss is said to be the longest between any two stars in the history of Bollywood.

It seems to be the deliberate attempt by director Rensil D'Silva, who thinks that a certain section of the sex-starved audience will come to the theatres just to see Saif and Kareena in bed.

We just hope it doesn't become another 'Choti Si Love Story'! (Remember Manisha Koirala's steamy scenes in the movie)

I've been betrayed many times: Karan Johar

It seems like Karan Johar has it all. But there is one thing that he holds closest to his heart. "The memory of the first screening of my first film, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, that I showed my parents with Manish (Malhotra) and Aditya (Chopra). After the film, my parents cried, we hugged each other for the longest time, making Manish and Adi cry too. That memory is so strong that even now when any of my films are released, it comes back to me," he says.

Karan feels that emotions are taking a back-seat and the trend will continue. "Everything has become so individualistic. Forty years ago, it was all about family, but now it's all about oneself. Tell me, do we really have an icon after Mahatma Gandhi?

Even patriotism is becoming individualistic. We have lost out on the drive to look for a hero. I can see that we'll rise as a country and be in a far better condition, but there is a gradual loss of emotions. I see that happening all around me now. The con of the situation is that we are becoming more and more lonely as we seem to be worried about only ourselves."

But as far as Karan is concerned, hope floats. "I trust people blindly. I've been betrayed many times but I'll continue to trust. That's the only way to live. What you give is what you get. Just being good to other people is a religion in itself. You can't be successful if you don't have the element of trust in you. I refuse to change myself."

SC rejects Karan Johar's plea for early hearing

The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to give an early date for hearing filmmaker Karan Johar's petition seeking quashing of a criminal case against him for allegedly insulting the national anthem.

Justice BN Agrawal and GS Singhvi criticised Johar for not appearing before the Lucknow trial court that had issued summons to him in the case which related to his film in a case relating to his movie Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham.

The Allahabad high court had dismissed Johar's plea for quashing the case. He then approached the apex court seeking an early hearing of the case. "You have not been appearing before the trial court. In criminal cases, if summons are issued, you have to appear. It is for the magistrate to dispense with personal appearance," the bench observed.

Arjun Rampal: It would be nice to work with Kareena and Kajol

With WAKE UP SID doing well at the box office, it is time for Karan Johar's Dharma Productions to move on to it's next films. Out of the plethora of films which are there on the production house's plate, the one which is about to go on floors pretty soon is STEPMOM remake. And the actor who is most pleased and raring to go is none other than Arjun Rampal who has bagged yet another biggie for himself.

"It's a very exciting character that I get to play in the film and I am just raring to go. Now this is a kind of performance oriented role that I wanted to lay my hands on. Especially after ROCK ON, it was imperative that I pick and choose great roles. STEPMOM gives me that opportunity", says Arjun who is meanwhile also busy wrapping up his portions for Prakash Jha's RAJNEETI.

"It is really nice to see such diverse subjects coming my way. People are giving me responsibility and as an actor, what more could really please you? Characters that I play in RAJNEETI, STEPMOM or HOUSEFULL are performance oriented. These are great times", he adds in an elated tone.

Coming back to STEPMOM remake, he is happy to be working with top female actors like Kareena Kapoor and Kajol.

"They are both superb. I have never worked with either of them before and it would be nice to co-star in a film with them", says Arjun.

The film would be directed by debutant Siddharth Malhotra.

"His approach towards STEPMOM is quite fresh. Even though the film is a remake, it is being completely remade. I am sure it would be one of the highlight films of 2010", says Arjun who is looking forward to an eventful year ahead.

Karan Johar on mantra of success

Just imagine about a young man getting through many projects at the same time. Appositely, Karan Johar can be regarded as the best exemplification as he isn’t merely focused on his ‘My Name is Khan’. Of course, the filmmaker has taken more affinity towards ‘production of films’.

With his ‘Wake up Sid’ directed by his close-associate Ayan Mukherji ready to hit the screens on October 2, Karan Johar has already got three script works of ‘Dostana-2’, remake of ‘Agneepath’ and animation version of ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’. As well an untitled film with Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor in lead roles will soon start rolling (directed by his erstwhile assistants).

At the moment, the filmmaker is fast on the heels of completing the final schedules of ‘My Name is Khan’ starring Shah Rukh and Kajol in lead roles.

So, how Karan could manage more projects at a row? Ask him and he comes up with an interesting smart reply, “Since it’s not possible to concentrate on all projects at the same time. It’s better to just outsource - handover the power to talented ones and expect big results”.

Karan Johar all set to launch his own fashion line!

We already know him as the extraordinarily talented director, the producer, and the chat-show host, but what many people may not know is that our very own Karan Johar is a fashion designer as well!

Yep, you read right! Karan has indeed been designing clothes for Shahrukh Khan (honestly, is there anything else left for these two to do together?) for a couple of years now. Recently, the stylish formal suits as well as casual clothes we saw SRK wear on Kaun Banega Crorepati 3 were all Karan’s work.

When asked about it, KJo doesn’t divulge much but does admit that he is interested in launching a fashion label for both, men and women. Another interesting fact he adds is that he used to choreograph fashion shows in college and that’s one of the reasons why fashion comes so easily to him!

We will also be seeing Karan’s designs in Farah Khan’s forthcoming Om Shanti Om where he has designed a retro look and a modern day look for who else but Shahrukh Khan. Looks like this multi-talented personality is ready to take over the fashion world very very soon!

Any guesses as to what his fashion line would be called? ‘KJo’ sounds like a safe bet as of now but let’s wait for more news on this one!

Sonam Kapoor sheds designer wear for KJo’s ‘I Hate Love Stories’

Sonam Kapoor is facing a dilemma these days, but what exactly is it that’s troubling her? Well, the actress, who is known to have a penchant for expensive designer wears, has been ordered by Karan Johar to get rid of her designer gowns and get back to the basics- tees and denims, for the actress is starring in his new film ‘I Hate Love Stories’.
According to reports, the film in question has Imran Khan along with Sonam Kapoor and will be directed by Puneet Malhotra.

“While Imran has a boyish image, Sonam has an international designer gown wali image. While it may have worked for her to get plush endorsement campaigns with international brands, she comes across too hip for the Indian masses. So Karan has asked her to lock away all designer gowns and start appearing in public in casual jeans and t-shirts,” says a source.

Sonam is apparently so keen on shopping that she has volunteered to go with Manish Malhotra (who will be designing her clothes for ‘I Hate Love Stories’) to shop for her wardrobe in the film.

Priyanka, Katrina at war

Grapevine buzzed that Priyanka Chopra and Katrina Kaif are all loggerheads. Both the actresses are fighting for the topmost position. Reportedly, Katrina Kaif has replaced Priyanka Chopra in Karan Johar’s Dostana sequel.

Priyanka who has number of hits in her credit denied the report of cat-fight between them and she also refused the report of Kat replacing her in Dostana sequel saying that her role in Dostana has reached its end and she is least bothered about who will take her place. She added that every actor is a competitor including Katrina.

Presently, she is basking in joy with the success of Vishal Bharadwaj’s ‘Kaminey’.

CNN-IBN: As the name of the film is Wake Up Sid, what is this one issue the you think the people of our country should wake up to and why?
Ranbir Kapoor: There are so many, even the simple things like waking up to love, responsibilities, life and your family. I think that it what Wake Up Sid is all about.
CNN-IBN: What does Ranbir wake up to everyday?
Ranbir Kapoor: A glass of juice. As I am an actor I wake up to movies. I go to my set, work on my scene and interact with other actors.
CNN-IBN: Tell us something about Karan and Konkona which we don't know already?
Ranbir Kapoor: Apart from being a god-gifted, talented actress, Konkona can finish a 300-350 pages book in an hour flat, which I think is marvelous. I think it will take me 300 days to do that. And Karan Johar is the most giving person you will ever come across in your life.

'Qurbaan' giving hot scenes between Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan

The real life lovers Kareena and Saif playing couple in Karan Johar's production venture "Qurbaan",which has given some steamy scenes for the film. The film also has a love making scene in which Kareena showing her exposing her back.

Kareena is just back in town after spending a long vacation in Switzerland. She got compliments by her best friend Karan Johar for her work in the film.

Sources revealed that, "Saif and Bebo reportedly took the shot in one go and were quite comfortable during the shoot. It is also being said that Chhote Nawab and Bebo have created a new Bollywood record for the longest onscreen kiss by any two co-stars."

However, the scenes are apparently too steamy for the regular audience. A section of the audience might decide to see the film only to see the real life couple making love on silver screen.

Ram Gopal Varma says he prefers making thrillers rather than candyfloss NRI stories.

"Some people have a fascination for making family dramas and I find making thrillers much exciting. And what's wrong with it?...any day it's better than making NRI stories," Varma, whose last release was the horror thriller Agyaat, says Ramu

Karan Johar made a sharp comment on Ram Gopal Varma in the upcoming episode of Farah Khan's show Tere Mere Beach Mein. "RGV should start making diet biscuits as he's not making cinema anymore," said Karan.

SRK practices autism at home

Shah Rukh Khan continues to practice the body language and speech patterns of his autistic character even at Home

Before Shah Rukh Khan played the autistic character in My Name Is Khan, Karan Johar met Londoner Chris Aston who suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome and his wife Maxine, who wrote a book on how to cope with a spouse suffering from the disease.

Says Karan, “Shibani and I met the couple. They were gracious enough to meet us in London. And that couple’s relationship became the basis of Rizwan and Mandira’s relationsip in My Name Is Khan. At its core level this film is a love story.”

Continues Karan, “My writer Shibani Bhatija researched extensively on various aspects of an autistic disorder and contacted the various National Autistic Centres. Shibani and I personally met a lot of autistic people, took notes went to U-Tube. Then Shah Shah Rukh did his own research.”

Karan admits this has been the most difficult film of his career. “It has taken its toll on me and Shah Rukh. It’s true Shah Rukh remained in character as Rizwan Khan even at home. At home in his body language he’s always Rizwan. I see him doing it all the time. I don’t think he has got out of it. Even when he’s with his children at home.”

Karan cuts down the theory that Shah Rukh’s disorder is inspired from Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump. “It’s not Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump at all. That was a totally different strain of autism. It’s nearer to Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man, though still very different. It’s what we call high-functional autism. You can have a regular life, be married, have children. But the syndrome does convey a fair amount of quirks and eccentricities. But his character is not essentially neuro-typical. The film has made me understand human behaviour and how to be compassionate and humane.”The film has sapped Karan’s energies. He needs to take a break. “I need to go away for a month. I don’t think it will happen. But no harm in dreaming.”

My Name Is Khan on a swimming spree

Water has always been a source of thrill and… trouble for some. The team of Karan Johar’s 'My Name Is Khan' is enjoying the watery days, both inside and outside the film sets. While its pouring cats-dogs outside, its equally water-jammed on the shooting sets of this movie.

Enclosed within the premises of Film City, the crew are having troublesome time shooting inside three feet deep water. The scene, which features a flooded New York, has been impressively recreated the foreign location at a whopping amount and planning. It is said that artificial rains are used thus adding more inconvenience to the shoot. Even the cameras were not spared; they had been positioned underwater to capture scenes below the water.

The real rains had also found its way into the sets, helping the team to get a natural effect. As for the cast of the movie, they are really said to be braving the water shoot. Our King Khan seemed to have gone all frog-skinned due to the long stay in waters. He has been even nicknamed as Mermaid by the people on the set. But along with the water, SRK has seemed to be taking it sportingly. After Shah Rukh, Jimmy Shergill will soon dive into the schedule to finish his round of shooting.

Hmm, our only concern is that hope all the people involved here would come out fit and fine.

Shahrukh Khan becomes wrinkled!

King of Bollywood Shahrukh Khan was wet and wrinkled. And it was none other than Karan Johar who wanted him like that.

According to reports for ‘My Name is Khan' Shahrukh was required to stay in neck-deep water for two days. And everybody knows how the skin becomes when one stays far too long in the water.

When Shahrukh emerged out of the water everyone on the sets started calling him ‘Mermaid'. But ever the gentleman Shahrukh didn't mind it a wee bit and laughed at his own watery get up.

Shahrukh we hope that this get up doesn't make you lose your fans!

Only Abhishek and John finalized for DOSTANA sequel!

A lot has been written about the sequel to Tarun Mansukhani's super successful DOSTANA. Even Tarun is amused, ''Yeah, Very true. Even I have heard a lot of news- What the script will be, the cost and where I will shoot etc. etc!''

When we asked him to spill the beans, especially regarding numero uno actress Katrina Kaif having been roped in, Tarun informs, ''It's after about eight months sabbatical that I am getting back to work. The fact is that I am finding it difficult to write (script)! The situation as of now is that only Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham have been finalized for the sequel. The rest of the cast will be decided after I am through with the script.''

That is the true state of affairs regarding the most awaited DOSTANA sequel, and should hopefully end the speculations and fictitious news items. Keep tuned to your favourite portal for the latest.

Karan Johar: WAKE UP SID has nothing to do with LAKSHYA

Ever since the first look of WAKE UP SID came out, there have been comparisons of this Ranbir Kapoor starrer with LAKSHYA. Is there really some similarity between the two films? Karan Johar clears the air.

"WAKE UP SID has nothing to do with LAKSHYA, it's as simple as that", declares Karan, "Yes, may be there are parallels being drawn because there is a thin line that goes through both the films. In WAKE UP SID, the first half is about youngsters who are aimless and wayward and it is this factor which is making people search for similarities in the two films."

As the entire promotional campaign of WAKE UP SID has always maintained, this is the story of Sid's world than anyone else.

"Yes, and his world is a really different world by the way", says Karan. "You have to understand his situations to know what the film is really about. Eventually, WAKE UP SID is a film about nothing but has everything in it. The film has a really simple plot with no complications per se. It has been made with a lot of soul and honesty and that is what forms the USP of WAKE UP SID. Once you are willing to allow yourself some place in Sid's space, you would begin connecting with him and go in the direction he wants to take you along."

Karan goes on to make a parting statement, "Just like DIL CHAHTA HAI, WAKE UP SID too is a coming of age film. Of course, the two are entirely different films from both texture as well as tone perspective."

My Name is Khan's actual price still unknown

So what's the actual price of My Name is Khan? Has Fox Star Studios India paid a massive Rs.100 crores for the global rights of the film (excluding music rights)? Or is the actual price Rs.81 crores? The speculation continues...

"It's a privilege to be associated with Karan Johar and Shahrukh Khan. It can't get bigger than that. But the price is completely not 100 crores or 81 crores. I wouldn't like to reveal the exact numbers, but it's completely off the mark," Vijay Singh, CEO of Fox Star Studios India, breaks his silence on this topic.

But what holds significance is that the film in question would be released extensively in the international markets. "My Name is Khan has tremendous international appeal and would be released by Fox Searchlight in America and 20th Century Fox across the globe. We aren't looking at a fancy print count to begin with, but we would take it beyond the Indian diaspora. Like Slumdog Millionaire was released at a mere 10 screens when it started out in America, but the screen count gradually rose to almost 3,000, thanks to a systematic strategy. That would be the strategy for My Name is Khan as well," Vijay Singh divulges.

Fox bags rights for My Name Is Khan in Rs 100 crore deal

Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol starrer My Name is Khan, directed by Karan Johar, is set to create a record ahead of its release early next year with Fox Star Studios reportedly buying its marketing and distribution rights for around Rs 100 crore.

This makes it the biggest distribution deal in Bollywood, outstripping Rs 90 crore for Aamir Khan-starrer Ghajini (see table).

The film, co-produced by Johar and Khan, has a Rs 55 crore budget and is set against the 9/11 terror attacks and its impact on an Indian Muslim living in the US.

According to industry watchers, Dharma Productions and Fox Star — the film marketing, distribution and production arm of Rupert Murdoch’s Fox and Star TV Network — have been in talks for a 50:50 co-production deal for Bollywood films. The distribution of My Name is Khan could be the starting point of their relationship.

Asked about the deal, Vivek Krishnani, head of distribution, Marketing and Syndication at Fox Star Studio, said: “We have been in talks with Karan Johar for movie rights. That is the stated position. I do not know if any deal has been struck on this matter nor do I know if something has been worked out in Los Angeles.”
Fox Star Studio came into prominence for distributing the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire in India earlier this year. So far, Fox has signed contracts with several film makers from both the Hindi and Tamil film industry.
